Tilos has an enery that the Greek islands used to offer in old days. It is the first energy-efficient island in Greece. On the island, an innovative hybrid system using solar and wind energy is being developed and operate and through a battery, a storage system will cover the electricity needs of the residents of the village.

Tilos Go Zero initiatives replaces landfill with a new recycling plant

The Greek island Tilos has made a concerted effort to make itself greener, by getting rid of its landfill on the island and have replaced it with a circular system recycling plant that will lower its waste levels by 86%.

It means that this idyllic Aegean paradise will remain so far some time to come. This island itself only has 750 inhabitants, and since May progress has been outstanding transformative.

Large common public bins have been removed for trash, and everything that can be recycled is. This special green initiative called that Just Go Zero initiatives was set up by PolyGreen, and the hope is it will be rolled out to many other Greek islands in the very near future.

Everything that is biodegradable is turned into soil treatment products, and plastic, paper, metal and glass are all recycled. Anything that is not recyclable is sent to an upcycling centre.

And if it’s still working is reused like electronics and clothes as second hand goods, or used by artists to use for creative works.

PolyGreen founder Athanasios Polychronopoulos details more about the initiative: “A new culture starts today in Tilos, a culture characterised by 100% landfill diversion, full circular waste management and most importantly, a completely new perception of life. We are envisioning a future, where waste will only to be seen in museums.”

Residents of the island are given segregation bags for their waste, and are expected to divide their rubbish up into them ready for collection by the recycling truck.

The recycling truck then picks the bags up on a designated day and then takes it to the recycling/ upcycling centre depending on the contents. Everything is tied into an useful Just Go Zero app, which gives residents an opportunity to see exactly how much waste they generate and how it has been recycled.

It also gives them useful information about how their recycled waste is used and which products it’s most likely to be recycled into.
