Margate seaweed is used for skincare by Kent company Haeckels to make Selfridges products

The Genting Casino changed into Margate seaweed company in Kent

The old Genting Casino at Zion Place, where the company’s facility is located is used to extract “goo” from the plant, which is then used to make the products. Seaweed picked by hand from the Kent coast is being transformed into high-end products like soap, serum and candles.

At the former casino, seaweed harvested from the Kent coast is converted into high-end serums and fragrances that are then sold at Selfridges. Every other day, workers from the Margate company Haeckels gather algae from the town’s beaches.

Seaweed hydrates. It’s rich with all natural valuable vitamins, minerals and amino acids around the beach. Besides it’s anti bacterial and anti inflammatory.

The company was founded in 2012 by Dom Bridges. He’s been Margate based coastal enthusiast and his company strives to create simple products using local natural ingredients. He began with a soap bar and then added skin care, fragrance, and candles, all created from the aquatic plant.

Coastal enthusiast Dom Bridges and his vegan eco friendly company

The founder Dom Bridges moved to Margate approximately 10 years ago and became a warden on the beach, ridding beaches of garbage, Haeckels managing director Charlie Vickery told KentOnline.

The town’s beaches are usually covered in seaweed, especially following a high tide or storm surge, and if it’s left out it will decay and smell. Then he began removing at the seaweed, rubbish and plastic waste from the water.

He started looking unto the antibacterial, nourishing, soothing, and moisturising characteristics of seaweed and how it may be employed in goods. Launched 11 years ago, Haeckels offers items for as much as 140 pound.

In 2020, the bran won the Wallpaper Design Award for its packaging, which is made from mushrooms and includes product information printed on paper infused with seeds that can be planted.

In 2022, Estee Lauder Companies(ELC) invested in cult UK skin care, body and fragrance brand Haeckels known for its sustainability practices and use of seaweed as an ingredient. ELC has no a board seat. Haeckels has previously taken angel investment with the ELC investment marking its first “growth round”.

The brad name is named after German naturalist Ernst Haeckel, a Darwinist known for his nature drawings, but who also published quack race science ideas. The firm just focuses on naturalism of the German and doesn’t share his other controversial aspect at all.
