Its chief executive has been instructed to write ti the Scottish Government and demand that the sale of single-use vapes cease immediately. Cross-party support was given to a resolution made by the council’s liberal democrats.

Local environment activist Laura Young gave a speech at the policy and resources committee meeting to introduce the campaign. We require merchants, manufactures, and brands that sell disposable vapes to comply with the many trade regulations imposed on them, she told STV news.

First and foremost, we need to stop young people from having access to these. We require them to comply with all trading standards and have programmes to accept them back, as well as collection places to properly recycle them.

Although it ought to have already happened, the council can surely take enforecement action while we, hopefully, wait for this ban on throwaway devices.

Disposable vapes causes environmental issues

Disposable vapes are available for use right away and have a capacity of 600 puffs. According to research by the environmental organisation Material Focus, 1.3 million disposable vapes are discarded every week in the UK.

The components of single-use gadgets wind up in Scotland’s environment when they are not recycled after being discarded in the majority of cases. Micro plastics have also been discovered in the stomachs of several species, including seafood intended for human consumption.

The materials further increase plastic pollution and harmful chemical leaks. Fraser Macpherson, a councillor for the Liberal Democrats, claimed that locals in his West ward had voiced worries about the effects on the environment.

“We’re thrilled by the backing from other parties.”he continued. Everyone agreed that we should ask the Scottish Government to outlaw them.

“The Scottish Government has a review on them which Zero Waste Scotland is undertaking on the effect of disposable vapes and we are feeding into that now to say they should be banned in Scotland.”
